We are now six days out from surgery. I'm happy to report that Steven is doing well. He's been at school most of the week, though I admit that yesterday he came home pretty tired. He had been there all day. We mustered the energy to bake some cookies--he was in good spirits.
We've been following the story of Tim Wright, a 12-year-old boy with Ewings sarcoma whose mom I met up at the hospital. He has the same surgeon as Steven and his tumor is on his tibia, like Steven. Yesterday he had a rotationplasty. You can read about his surgery here. Steven has asked to check their blog all day to see what they said about the surgery and was very interested in how it went. We are so glad that everything went well for him and wish him a speedy recovery.
Tomorrow morning we meet with the surgeon and we are collecting quite the list of questions. In the meantime, tonight Steven is off to play laser tag with some cousins. We've got to pack in the fun--it will be a while until he is able to do some things like that again.
Hi, I'm Brittany's sister Buffy, and Garrison is in our ward. What a sweet boy. I know life probably seems insane right now, but seeing the Hays family every week shows that life will definitely get back to normal someday. A new kind of normal, but normal! Good Luck with everything!
ReplyDeleteWe're praying for you guys!
ReplyDeleteI am both excited and nervous for you all! I can't even imagine what the next few days will feel like but I continue to storm heaven for your entire family. You can do this!!
ReplyDeleteTell Steven the surgery went well and Tim is committed to getting home by Saturday. Dr. Jones has been awesome!
ReplyDeleteCory Wright(Tim's Dad)
Tim is getting stronger each day. If you have access to crutches, have Steven get use to them before the surgery. That way when he gets up on them with only one leg, he know what it should feel like! I wish we had done this with Tim. Thanks for the cute card, gift card and book. If you would like Steven to meet Tim before the surgery, let me know. It might be good for everyone!! Just some things that will hopefully help you:)
ReplyDeletePack in the fun! We are all about that kind of attitude!
ReplyDeleteSteven, you don't know me but I work in special needs mutual with your aunt kirsten. i love her. from what she tells me you are amazing. she is too! in january my husband bob had a below the knee amputation. now there is a bit of a difference. he is 55 and you are 9. he has healed up and adapted to his prosthetic wonderful. which tells me you will even do better than him. his attitude is why he has done so well(and the help of our Heavenly Father). It sounds as if your attitude is wonderful. Even though I don't know you I am proud of you and you are in my prayers. We were very nervous the few days before surgery just because we didn't know what to expect, but it went so well, as will yours. I asked the dr. if we could have my husbands leg in a jar for a halloween decoration (but I was just kidding) but he said no anyway. I know all will go well steven. stay strong, positive and know that you will be an amazing role model for people who face tough things in life. We will be praying for you.
